TRANSCRIPT OF press conference
GIVEN BY Sgt. Emilio Garcia
ON 06:41 AM, June 28th, 1991.
Thanks for waiting, guys. We’re going to begin with a prepared statement, then we can move on to all those questions that I’m sure you have. I do want to warn you, though, that this is going to get extremely graphic.
…
At approximately 9:49 PM on Thursday, June 27th, officers responded to a noise complaint at the Mulvihill Place apartment complex. Residents reported extremely loud music that started playing on the third floor approximately two hours earlier. In the process of the officers knocking on the door and windows, attempting to contact the residents of the apartment, officers heard what they determined to be a scream coming from inside the apartment unit.
After warning the individuals inside of their intent, the officers broke down the door. A truly grisly, inhumane scene was found inside.
An as-yet-unidentified mixed-race female, approximately twenty years of age, was found bound in an upright position. Clear signs of torture were evident on her person. Medical examination determined that she was subjected to multiple surgical procedures, performed by an individual with little or no obvious medical training or background. Portions of the victim’s skin had been removed and replaced with grafts from several individuals. Her hands and feet were … Excuse me for a moment.
…
Her hands and feet were also removed and replaced with those of multiple other victims. All body grafts were affixed to the victim using common sewing thread, and multiple notations were made using chalk on her person. The phrase “A stitch in time saves nine” was written on the wall of the apartment in blood.
Shortly after the victim was found, she died on the scene.
The investigation so far leads us to believe that this was the work of a singularly depraved individual, whose utter disregard for human decency has left several victims permanently disfigured. Our heart goes out to the victims’ families, and we will move with utmost speed to make sure that this suspect is apprehended and punished to the fullest extent of the law.
I’ll take questions now.
